Fesselnd, verstörend, düster: Christeenes 'Midnite Fukk Train'

Christeene ist ein Phänomen! Als Kind der New Yorker Subkultur fasziniert und verstört sie ihr Publikum gleichermaßen. Heute erscheint das neue Album 'Midnite Fukk Train': Darauf hört man schrille Saxophon-Sounds, düstere Gitarren, ein erdrückendes Schlagzeug und natürlich Christeenes explosive Stimme.

Die queere Musikerin mag mit ihrer Kunst polarieren, lässt aber in keinem Fall eine Seele unberührt. Die Songs des neuen Albums bringen Christeenes rohe Wut über die aktuellen, beunruhigenden Zeiten zum Ausdruck: kraftvoll, fesselnd, heroisch. Der 'Guardian' schrieb kürzlich 'Tina Turner meets Diamanda Galás' – das kann ich 100 % so stehen lassen.

Anlässlich der Veröffentlichung von 'Midnite Fukk Train' hat uns Christeene ein paar Interviewfragen beantwortet. Hierfür habe ich mich entschieden, die Antworten in ihrer originalen Form zu belassen, weil ... ach, lest einfach selbst! This is art!

Bouygerhl: Für mich bist Du das personifizierte 'Mehr': Mehr als nur Musik, mehr als nur schockierende Outfits, mehr als nur Performance! Hast Du selbst eine Definition für deine Kunst – wenn es denn überhaupt eine benötigt?
For me you are the personification of 'More': More than just music, more than just shocking outfits, more than just performance! Do you have a definition for your art - if it needs one at all?

Christeene: I like u sayin MORE it reminds me of how i try too navigate every fukkn day by fukkn Liza minnelli sayin YES to every fukkn thing that presents itself an i reckon that defines my art. i say yes as much as i fukkn can an use it too push tha deep fear away

BG: Ich habe entschieden, Deine Antworten in unserem Interview im Original zu belassen, weil ich finde, dass deine besondere Artikulation und Schreibweise fester Bestandteil Deiner künstlerischen Identität sind. Wie sehen Deine Whatsapp-Nachrichten an deine Freunde und die Familie aus?
I decided to leave your answers in their original form in our interview, because I find that your particular articulation and writing are an integral part of your artistic identity. What do your Whastapp messages to your friends and family look like?

C: when im chewin tha fat with friendz an famille i mainly try to doo it with my mouth chattin on tha phone instead uh all tha fukkn typing. i wanna hear tha voices. i wanna read that tone.

BG: Der Sound Deines ersten Albums war punkiger Elektro-Rap, das zweite Album war ein Stück elektronischer und experimenteller. Die Songs vom neuen Album sind dagegen teilweise fast schon 'klassische' Songs. In 'Lo Paid Runway Model' hört man ein Saxophon, 'Winston' präsentiert sich als eine Art Speed-Country-Song. Was war Dein musikalischer Ansatz?
The sound of your first album was punky electro-rap, the second album was a bit more electronic and experimental. The songs from the new album, on the other hand, are almost 'classic' songs in parts. In 'Lo Paid Runway Model' you hear a saxophone, 'Winston' presents itself as a kind of speed country song. What was your musical approach?

C: i was bein haunted by tha saxophone real hard. i couldnt git it outta my head. it is tha closest sound out therr that sounds how my brain fukkn feels when im ragin an playin on stage so tha sax kinda led tha way in my head an on tha other side uh that i was already explorin wurkin with musicians more an moore. i do not settle down. I do not wanna home. I do not wish ferr mah music to settle an wanna home either.

BG: 'Piano Song' geht noch ein ganzes Stück weiter und ist eine richtige Ballade. Erzähl' uns mehr vom Song und dieser melancholisch-sentimentalen Seite in dir!
'Piano Song' even goes a bit further and is a real ballad. Tell us more about the song and this melancholic-sentimental side of you!

C: Piano Song is a deep psychological journey through my relationships with tha creative forces around me. Its tha first song ive ever written and composed at the piano, and tha first time ive played and sung with an instrument. im very fukkn happy bout that. i want moore.

BG: Gibt es einen Song auf dem neuen Album, der für Dich eine besondere Bedeutung hat?
Is there a song on the new album that has a special meaning for you?

C: GUTT IT

BG: Auf dem Album-Cover sieht man Dich mit einer Maske. Für mich wirkt sie wie ein Schutzschild oder ein Versteck? Wenn ja – wovor?
On the album cover you can be seen wearing a mask – to me it feels like a layer of protection or a hiding place. If so, from what?

C: i had a full face mask on mah face for tha last album called BASURA an i carried that thing around with me too every fukkn show an ripped it off my face at tha start uh every set. tha masks start too collect that energy frum that shows and tha tours. they hide tha inside frum you til u are allowed to see, but u came anyway. u came to look at that mask an too take whats inside it. i live ferr this shit.

Im very vulnerable and sweet sometimes too. a lot on stage between tha fires. its just who i am.

BG: Besonders Performance und Videokunst spielen bei Dir eine zentrale Rolle. Wenn Du neue Projekte angehst: Kommt der Impuls auf visueller oder akustischer Ebene?
Performance and video art in particular play a central role in your work. When you start new projects: Does the impulse come on a visual or acoustic level?

C: i reckon its a visual thing first? im not really sure. i find performance and tha video art to be extremely different thingz in my wurk. tha video wurk is like u seein inside of my head at all that secret images that live in mah soundscape, my wurld. Folks like PJ Raval have been there ferr years to help me realize how to share those images through tha wurk they do in film. its captured forever. its beautifuul to mee. tha performance, live performance i mean, well u just better buckle tha fukk up an git ready for tha fukkn ride. its aggressive. pleasantly aggressive. tha beats start in my head an pump tha machine an it all goes round an round.

BG: Du präsentierst Dich sehr düster und roh. Was ist die Message dahinter?
Your persona is very gritty and raw. What is the message behind it?

C: im very vulnerable and sweet sometimes too. a lot on stage between tha fires. its just who i am.

BG: In Interviews sprichst Du oft davon, dass Du mit Deiner Persona und Kunst die Menschen aufrütteln möchtest. Was schmerzt Dich in der Gesellschaft momentan am meisten?
In interviews you often talk about how you want to shake people up with your person and your art. What hurts you most in society at the moment?

C: tha dependency on social media platforms an how they have manipulated our minds an invaded our ability to feel comfortable in our truest self which is off tha screen off tha filter off tha me show an right up in each others stanky ass nothin special but everything special wrinkled faces

BG: Für Deine Arbeit mit Rick Ownens tauchst Du in die Welt der High-End Haute Couture ein. Das klingt zunächst wie ein vermeintlicher Kontrast zum 'Filthy'-Look von Christeene, oder?
For your work with Rick Owens, you immerse yourself in the world of high-end haute couture. At first, that sounds like a supposed contrast to Christeene's 'filthy' look, doesn't it?

C: tha best fukkn thing about it iz to climb inside uh every wurld u can an bring all of u into it an hope youll find some fukk like rick owens who wants to share an show an tell with u all back an forth style. like uh lil auntie fukkn mame. i wurk reeeel well with contrasts

BG: Du hast bereits mit Peaches, Fever Ray und Wolfgang Tillmans zusammengearbeitet – drei der großen Namen im queeren (Kunst)-Universum. Welcher queere Artist steht als Nächstes auf Deiner Wunsch-Kollaborations-Liste?
You already worked with Peaches, Fever Ray and Wolfgang Tillmans - three of the big names in the queer (art) universe. Which queer artist is next on your wish list of collaborations?

C:ii gotta movie in mah head an i want trey parker an matt stone to produce it with therr new company. One uh them has to have gay in them riyeet?

BG: Christeenes Herz schlägt auf der einen Seite in der Subkultur, kitzelt aber auch ganz klar den Mainstream. Hast Du hier eine Mission / Vision?
Christeene's heart beats on one side in the subculture, but also clearly tickles the mainstream. Do you have a mission / vision here?

BG: Du bist auf einer Farm aufgewachsen – was vermisst Du am meisten?
You grew up on a farm. What do you miss the most?

C: i grew up in tha woods and yez there were farms. i miss tha chickens tha most
