BOUYGERHL ist ein Archiv für queere Musik. Im Fokus stehen Kurzportraits von Acts, die sich als lesbisch / schwul / bi / trans / non-binär / queer identifizieren. Komplettiert wird das Portal durch einen eigenen Podcast, einen Blog, eine Konzertreihe (Queer Music Night) sowie dem Queer Music Festival.
BOUYGERHL möchte das gesellschaftliche Bewusstsein schärfen. Es geht um Sichtbarkeit, Selbstverständnis und Empowerment von LGBTQ+. Es geht um Identität. Denn Identität ist Realität!
Kriterium für die Aufnahme in die Datenbank ist, dass sich Musiker*innen jemals öffentlich als lesbisch, schwul, bisexuell, trans, non-binär und/oder queer identifiziert haben (bei Bands muss das nicht auf alle Mitglieder zutreffen). Bei dieser Definition gibt es kein 'zu wenig' oder 'zu viel' queer, kein richtig oder falsch. Es zählt allein das Bekenntnis – und damit der Beitrag zur Repräsentanz und Gleichstellung von LGBTQ+.
Das BOUYGERHL-Archiv entscheidet nicht über Relevanz. Denn egal, ob subtil oder laut: Sobald sich Fans durch Musik direkt oder indirekt mit den Themen Identität, Sexualität und Gender auseinandersetzen, leistet der Act seinen Beitrag zur Schaffung einer gesellschaftlichen Selbstverständlichkeit. Darüber hinaus können diese Stimmen Rolemodel für die Selbstfindung sowie Vorbild für ein offenes Miteinander sein.
Bei der Präsentation der Musiker*innen spielt der persönliche Geschmack keine Rolle – es gibt kein 'gute' oder 'schlechte' Musik. Bei BOUYGERHL steht Pop neben Punk, Indie neben Schlager, Rap neben Country und Singer-Songwriter neben Industrial. Auch die Quantität der Releases ist nicht ausschlaggebend – egal ob 1 Song oder 30 Alben. Denn wer möchte schon z.b. auf 'Aow Tou Dou Zat', den One-Hit von Jean Paul Gaultier von 1989, verzichten?
Der Name des Projekts BOUYGERHL findet seinen Ursprung in zwei Songtiteln der Musikerin Anohni – eine der progressivsten queeren Künstlerinnen unserer Zeit und leidenschaftliche Stimme im Kampf für Transgender- und Frauenrechte. Die Worte 'Bouy' und 'Gerhl' sind dabei nicht binär zu verstehen – also stellvertretend für männlich oder weiblich – sondern bereits als Aufweichung in sich. Die lautmalerische Verschmelzung zu BOUYGERHL ist somit Hommage und Statement gleichermaßen.
Initiator von BOUYGERHL ist der Leipziger Veranstalter Zacker. Seit 20 Jahren organisiert er Konzerte, Partys, Festivals und Events – stets mit dem Fokus auf queerer Musik. Aus zunächst rein persönlichem Interesse wird nun ein Beitrag zum gesellschaftlichen Diskurs. Seine Beweggründe für das Projekt: Die Sichtbarkeit von queeren Musiker*innen zu fördern, die – im wahrsten Wortsinn – ihre Stimme heben. Und zum anderen, damit die Entwicklung einer Community zu ermöglichen, die diese Leidenschaft für Musik teilt und Neues entdecken will.

BOUYGERHL is an archive for queer music, the focus of which centers on brief portraits of acts who identify as lesbian / gay / bi / trans / non-binary / queer. The portal is supplemented by a podcast (in German language), a blog, a concert series (Queer Music Night) and the Queer Music Festival.
BOUYGERHL aspires to raise social awareness. It’s about visibility, self-image and empowerment of LGBTQ +. It's about identity. Because identity is reality!
In order to meet the criteria to be included in the database, a musician must have publicly identified themselves at some point as lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, non-binary and / or queer (in the case of bands, this does not have to apply to all members). In regards to this definition there is no such thing as 'too little' or 'too much' queer, there is no right or wrong. All that counts is the commitment – and thus the contribution to the representation and equality of LGBTQ+.
The BOUYGERHL archive does not attempt to determine the relevance of an act. Whether subtle or raucous: the minute that fans deal, directly or indirectly, with the topics of identity, sexuality and gender through music, the act has made its contribution to creating a social norm. Beyond this, these voices can be role models for self-discovery as well as role models for a collective openness.
Personal taste contributes no bias in the presentation of the music – there is no such thing as 'good' or 'bad' music. At BOUYGERHL, pop stands alongside punk, indie next to schlager, rap next to country and singer-songwriter next to industrial. The quantity of releases is also irrelevant – be it a single song or 30 albums – because who could forgo, for example, 'Aow Tou Dou Zat', Jean Paul Gaultier's 1989 one-hit-wonder?
The name of the project BOUYGERHL has its origins in two song titles by the musician Anohni – one of the most progressive queer artists of our time and a passionate voice in the fight for transgender and women's rights. The words 'Bouy' and 'Gerhl' are not to be understood as binary – that is, representative of male or female – but rather as a blurring of definition itself. The merger which forms BOUYGERHL is, in this respect, both a homage and a statement.
BOUYGEHRL is an initiative of the Leipzig-based organizer Zacker. For 20 years he has been organizing concerts, parties, festivals and events – always with a focus on queer music. What was initially a purely personal interest is now becoming a contribution to the social discourse. His motivation for the project: to promote the visibility of queer musicians who – in the truest sense of the word – raise their voices. And, additionally, to enable the development of a community that shares this passion for music and the desire to discover new things.
